VOLGA – Daymein Lucas ran the ball 39 times for 261 yards and three touchdowns as Sioux Valley defeated Flandreau 26-6 in high school football action Friday night.

Sioux Valley hadn’t allow any points for eight-plus quarters dating back to its season opener, before the Fliers broke through in the final stanza.

“I thought our guys did an amazing job playing the #3 ranked team in 11B Friday night,” said Flier coach Travis Ahrens.

The Fliers’ lone touchdown came on Nate Kneebone’s 21-yard catch from Michael Witte with 7:26 left to provide for the final margin.

The Cossacks finished with 370 rushing yards, and the Fliers had 142.

Stoltenberg paced Sioux Valley with eight tackles. Jake Schneider, Connor Logan, Lane VanderWal and Tyler Schwartz added seven stops apiece.

Witte ran for 70 yards and threw for 55 for Flandreau.

Matt Pauley came up with 18 tackles, while Brendan Ten Eyck, Kyle Johnson and Braden Peters had seven apiece.

Coach Ahrens added, “Our young men battled tough the whole night. In the first half our four turnovers stuffed some promising drives. Defensively, our guys really turned it on and were able to slow down a punishing rushing attack from Sioux Valley. Ultimately, our team took another step forward in getting better and made a talented Sioux Valley team earn it at times.”
