The Flandreau girls’ track and field team lost a couple standout performers but returns a solid group, including state meet individual qualifiers Madie Hursey (3,200 meters) and Hannah Parsley (400 meters).
The Fliers also qualified for the 4x100-meter relay and 1,600-meter sprint medley a year ago.
Flandreau placed second in the Lake Central Conference and fifth in the Region 3A meet in 2016.
Head coach Jameson Clarke listed the sprints, relays and distance events as the team’s strengths this year.
Other returning letter winners include Kylie Bertram, Kathy Parsley, Ashytn Bertram, Elle Thompson and Cassidy Keith. Mara Lunday is the team’s other returner.
On the boys’ side, Flandreau is coming off a fifth-place finish in the LCC meet and a sixth-place showing at Region 3A.
Clarke noted the team’s strengths will be in the sprints and distance events.
Returning letter winners are Kasen Grengs, Martin Ruelas, Ben Hobbie, Brendan Ten Eyck, Alex Peterson, Trevor Hahn, Brock Kepford, Gabe Hobbie, Lars Dailey and Luke Behrens. Also returning to the lineup are Connor Roozen and Kyle Johnson.
“We’re really looking forward to another great year,” said Clarke. “Overall, the number of upperclassmen on both the boys and girls is down from last year so we are relying on our younger kids quite a bit. On the girls side we have two individual state qualifiers, Madeline Hursey and Hannah Parsley, back. We also have Kylie Bertram, Ashtyn Bertram and Cassidy Keith, who were on relay teams that qualified for state back as well.
“On the boys’ side, the coaching staff is looking at Kasen Grengs and Martin Ruelas to continue to be leaders for the younger guys we have on the team. The kids have been working hard and pushing each other to get better. We’re excited to see everyone improve each day.”
