Flier boys take SoDak 16 defeat

HURON – No. 6 Chamberlain defeated No. 11 Flandreau 56-48 in the Class A SoDak 16 on Tuesday night, March 9 at Huron Arena.
The Cubs jumped out to a 16-7 lead after a quarter and were up 35-22 at halftime.
“We struggled the first half getting comfortable and into the flow of the game,” said Coach Brendan Sheppard. “However, the second half we started to play some ball and gave ourselves a chance to win.”
Flandreau closed the scoring gap and got within seven at the end of three, 46-39, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

“We had five possessions to start the 4th quarter where we could have taken the lead, but couldn’t make a play.”
Flandreau got 18 points and seven rebounds from Tash Lunday. Taryn Ukestine chipped in with 11 points, Chase LeBrun nine points and seven rebounds, Alex Anderson six points and Liam Streitz, four. The Fliers shot 40% from the field and garnered 25 rebounds.
Drayton Priebe scored 25 points for Chamberlain, which improved to 17-4 and as the sixth seed will open the Class A tourney Thursday against three seed Sioux Valley in in Sioux Falls. Cameron Caldwell added 17 markers and Sellyck McManus contributed 12.
Flandreau concluded the season with a 16-7 mark.
We’re disappointed that we couldn’t complete our goal of reaching the State tournament,” Sheppard added.
“We had a great season, playing quality teams and having some memorable wins. The team would like to thank the community and the school for all of the support this season.”
Grduating seniors will be Mario Bonilla, Sam Gassman and Taryn Ukestine.
