Flier boys take runner-up in Big East Conference Tourney

PARKER – Sioux Valley defeated Flandreau 82-55 in the Big East Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament championship game Saturday evening.

Connor LeBrun led the Fliers with 19 points and Dylan LeBrun added 15.

"Sioux Valley had a great first half,” said Flier coach Brendan Sheppard.

“We could have been better defensively, but they made some tough shots and they made a lot of them.  We played okay offensively and only had 5 turnovers.  Just a situation of not making 3 point shots and having a tough time finishing over their size at the rim.”

The Cossacks led 23-11 after a quarter and 50-27 at halftime.

For Sioux Valley (9-1), Trevor Hanson finished with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range, and grabbed 16 rebounds. He added four blocked shots and four assists.

Trevor Olson added 22 points and Ryan Schuster 11.

Parker beat Baltic 73-48 in the third-place game, McCook Central/Montrose topped Howard in the fifth-place game and Garretson picked up its first win of the season by dropping Chester Area 45-37 in the seventh-place game.

Flandreau was up 15-7 after a quarter, 34-19 at halftime and 62-42 through three.

“In the first half, we were a little passive against Baltic’s zone and settled for too many 3-point shots,” said Sheppard.” In the third quarter, we were much more aggressive pushing the pace and attacking the zone. We had nice contributions from a variety of players tonight.”

Nathan Kneebone added 18 points and five boards. Andrew Julson also scored 18 points. Nathan Cloud dished out six assists.
