Flandreau will participate in DOT road signing project

At the August 21 city council meeting, council members approved to participate in a road signing project through the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

For this project, the state will hire a consultant to drive on every street in the city checking all signs for reflectivity and if a sign should be on a breakaway pole.

After this, the consultant will come back and replace every sign, including stops, yields, mile per hour and street name signs, that need to be replaced and put signs on breakaway poles as needed.

The entirety of the project will be funded at the expense the DOT using federal funds.

Once the project is done, the city’s only obligation will be maintenance of the signs, which consists of nighttime visual inspection making sure the signs are still reflective.

The replacement of non-reflective signs will be the city’s responsibility.

Aldermen Brad Bjerke, Bart Sample and Dan Sutton voted yes, and Bob Pesall and Karen Tufty voted no.
