Flandreau sales tax receipts ‘unprecedented’

Sales tax revenues in Flandreau are coming in at a record pace.

At the Oct. 2 city council meeting, city administrator Don Whitman shared sales tax figures that showed tax receipts through the first three quarters of 2017 are up 27.3 percent over the same period last year.

“The sales tax receipts are just coming in fantastically,” Whitman said. “It’s unprecedented.”

Sales tax receipts throughout he first three quarters of 2017 total $576,792.82 compared to $452,781.77 through three quarters in 2016, a difference of $124,011.05

Whitman cited the opening of Tractor Supply Co. and expansions at Dollar General and Mad Mary’s as possible contributors to the increase in sales tax receipts.

According to August 2017 figures from the S.D. Department of Revenue website, $2.5 million in taxable sales generated $51,103.15 in taxes. Flandreau’s leading categories in taxable sales that month were retail with $1.2 million in sales and $25,201.08 in taxes; transportation, communication, electric, gas and sanitary services with $462,361.58 in sales generating $9,247.23 in taxes; and services with $370,310.95 in sales generating $7,406.20 in taxes.
