Flandreau Cardinals move on in Class B State Tourney with win over Four Corners

SIOUX FALLS – Eight of the Cardinals’ 15 hits went for extra bases as Flandreau handled Four Corners 15-0 in five innings in the first round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Ronken Field.
The locals now will face Dimock/Emery on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls. The winner moves further on in State Tourney play.
Jared Campbell went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. He also tossed a scoreless fifth inning, striking out one batter.
Riley Johnson finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs for Flandreau, which broke open the game with nine runs in the fourth frame.
Starter Zach Weinandt gave up four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in four innings.
Johnson and Campbell opened the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back doubles to get the Cardinals on the board.
Bret Severtson, Beau Severtson and Johnson had consecutive doubles to get the bottom of the second underway, pushing the margin to 3-0.
Campbell walked and Nate Henry tallied a one-out RBI single. Campbell scored to make it 5-0.
Flandreau put up the nine runs on eight hits and a walk in the fourth.
Johnson singled and stole second. Campbell and Henry sandwiched RBI singles around Mitch Foster’s run-scoring double to extend the advantage to 8-0. Henry finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
After Keith Cutler hit into a fielder’s choice, Tanner Harris walked and Jake Patterson singled. Cutler scampered home on a wild pitch.
Bret Severtson added a two-run double – his second two-bagger of the game – to make it 11-0. Johnson stroked an RBI single.
Campbell then hit an inside-the-park home run as the Cardinals moved ahead 14-0.
Cutler singled to get the fifth underway and Wiese walked. Both players moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch.
Patterson’s sacrifice flight to right field plated Cutler to end the game via the 15-run mercy rule.
Adam Kaus took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits and three walks in two innings. J.D. Farley allowed 10 runs on nine hits and two walks over the final 2 1/3.
