The Colman Volunteer Fire Department conducted a controlled burn Sunday at an abandoned acreage west of Interstate 29.
Starting about 8:15 a.m., the department burned a barn, a house, grainery and three other outbuildings at 472nd Avenue and 229th Street. The burn, which lasted until about 1 p.m., was used as training for the department and for new firefighters from Flandreau and Wentworth. Clint Corey taught the group of young firefighters.
The property, owned by someone from Wisconsin and managed through a trust, was burned for liability reasons, said Colman Chief Jason Landis. No one has lived on the property for 50 years, he said.
