Fire destroys rural Flandreau home

A Flandreau home was destroyed by fire that started in the early morning hours of Aug. 30.

Flandreau volunteer firefighters, along with units from Colman and Trent, responded to the call to 438th Avenue and 235th Street southeast of Flandreau about 5:30 a.m.
Brett Opland and his family were living at the home and buying it under a contract for deed so the fire marshal was called to investigate a cause, which was undetermined, said Jud Krull, Flandreau fire chief.
The family, which includes two sons, exited the house out the door where the fire was on the outside of the home, Krull said. No one was injured.
When fire fighters arrived, half of the home was in flames and was a total loss, Krull said. The fire was out by about 9 a.m., but fire personnel didn’t leave the scene until the afternoon.
