Finally, it's pool weather again

The Flandreau Aquatic Center opened on Saturday, May 27, but saw attendance numbers rise greatly into the first weekend of June with temperatures reaching over 80 degrees.

“It was packed all weekend because it was so hot,” said Michelle Ten Eyck, aquatic center manager.

Swimming lessons begin on June 19 and are open for signup. They will remain open until the classes are filled.

Ten Eyck noted a number of new additions to the aquatic center this summer. First, there are 22 lifeguards on staff, quite a bit more than last year.

This summer the pool will also offer season passes for water walking and water aerobics in the mornings.

“We’re dedicating our mornings from 9-noon to community wellness,” Ten Eyck said.

Core aquatics for athletes, lap swim and swimming lessons will also take place in the mornings during the summer.

At a May meeting, the city council approved the purchase of four pop-up canopy tents to rent out at the aquatic center, $10 for a full day and $5 for half a day.

The cabanas will be placed on the grass area inside the fence with the open area facing the pool.

Ten Eyck said they also plan to have two or three middle school nights and at least one movie night at the pool this summer.

For Flandreau city residents, single passes to the aquatic center are $65 and family passes $108. For those coming from out of town, single passes cost $74 and family passes $123.

The Flandreau Aquatic Center is open every day of the week. Open swim on Monday-Friday goes from noon to 4:50 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m., with Wednesday evenings dedicated to family night.

Saturday hours are noon to 4:45 p.m. and 5:15 to 8 p.m. On Sunday, the pool is open from noon to 5:30 p.m. with family night from 6-8 p.m.
