Duane Smallfield, 77 passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 in Omaha, NE after a long illness.
Duane was born on October 18, 1942, in Tyler, Minnesota, to Elmer and Mabel (Kramer) Smallfield.
Duane grew up on a farm northwest of Elkton, and graduated 8th grade at District 65 country school, Elkton High School in 1960, and South Dakota State University in 1964. Following graduation, Duane moved to Estherville, Iowa, where he began working at Golden Sun Feeds. It was at Golden Sun that he met his future wife, Linda Olson. He later remarked that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Duane and Linda were married on September 24, 1966, in Estherville. In 1973, they returned to the family farm where Duane specialized in raising hogs and was named South Dakota Master Pork Producer in 1979. He farmed until 1999 and also worked at South Dakota State University from 1996 until 2010 in the cattle feedlot. Duane resided at the farm until his death.
Duane’s faith was extremely important to him, and he devoted much of his time to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton.. Duane acted as the Treasurer, Secretary, President, Elder, and was also a Sunday School Teacher at the church for many years.
Community involvement was also important to Duane, as he held offices on the Brookings County Zoning Board, Elkton Farmer’s Coop, Elkton School Board, Elkton Township Board, and the Elkton Museum. Duane will also be remembered as providing unwavering support to fellow community members, frequently attending moments of celebration as well as funerals in the community.
Duane enjoyed many loves in life, but he especially enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He greatly loved the time he was able to spend attending his grandchildren’s events, as well as consistently attending other family functions. Duane also enjoyed working with livestock and attending sporting events.
Duane is survived by his children: Ted (Stacy) Smallfield of St. Peters, MO, Tom Smallfield of Elkton, and Amy (Shawn) Jelen of Ivanhoe, MN; four grandchildren: Chloe, Andrew, and Owen Smallfield, and Brooklyn Jelen; brothers, James of Elkton and Ronald of Lake Hendricks, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Smallfield, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton, with burial following the service at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held the evening prior, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at the church from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Great Plains Lutheran High School or the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton in Duane’s memory.
