Don’t miss the new “Fall Sports Rally” August 16

Just before it’s time to head back to school, activities and sporting events, the Flandreau Flier Booster Club will be hosting a night of fun and wants to see many people come out to enjoy it and be involved.

Not just students, coaches, athletes and their families, but the entire community.

“In an effort to increase membership and highlight our Fall Sports, we decided to try a new ‘Fall Sports Rally’ to kick off the 2022-23 seasons at the school,” said Flandreau Flier Booster Club secretary Megan Severtson.

The newly created Fall Sports Rally will take place on Tuesday, August 16 from 6-8 pm at the Moody County Fairgrounds, west of the Flier Booster Club football stadium.

Instead of holding the usual membership drive burger meal prior to a Friday night football game, the Booster Club will make the night last a bit longer with entertainment. There will be a kids’ zone, raffles, food and a dunk tank in which you can nominate your favorite “participant.”

It will still be the Membership Drive night where folks can renew their membership or, be first time supporters of the Flier Booster Club.

“Our Booster Club supports all high school sports and their corresponding youth sports teams,” Severtson said.

“It isn’t just for parents that have kids in current athletic programs. There are many people in our community who are big supporters of Flandreau or are looking to get involved. They may have children too young to begin sports or no immediate ties to our teams. Everyone is welcome,” she said.

The evening begins at 6 pm with the membership meal. For a $30 family membership, the entire family can eat that evening. Single memberships are available for $15 which also includes the meal.

Each membership will also receive a newly created Flandreau Flier decal to display however you choose.

Also at 6 p.m., a kids’ zone area manned by the student athletes will be available. Free games for the youngsters will take place at different stations.

And, the dunk tank will open. Participants in the dunk tank are chosen as follows:

  • There will be eight “nominees” accepted to sit in the tank for a 15-minute turn.
  • Any person can pay $100 to nominate someone for the allotted time in the tank. If this “nominee” wishes to forfeit their spot and not sit in the tank, they pay $100 before August 14 to be allowed out and then that person nominates someone else. Once they have paid to get out, they cannot be nominated again. This newly nominated person can also pay to get out of the tank by nominating someone else. This can go on until nominations close at midnight, August 12. The final nominees are then asked to participate on August 16.
  • To nominate someone, contact Severtson at megan.severtson@k12.sd.us or call her at 605-999-3185.

Near the 7 p.m. hour, the school song will be played and the fall coaching staff of Brendan Streitz – Cross Country, Julia Fargen – Volleyball, Josh Edlund – Football and Brooke Piearson – Boys Golf will each speak about their upcoming seasons.

Raffles will also take place throughout the night. Tickets can be purchased for various prizes to include: the “Best Seat in the House” at home games, the “Best Spot in the Parking Lot,” free popcorn and two adult season activity tickets. Drawings will be held at 7:20 pm that evening.

Folks can also show support for the Flier athletes by purchasing a yard sign which is available that night.

The Booster Club has created a “remind app” for your phone. This app will send out reminders of important club news.

Login to the website https://www.remind.com/join/bflandr so you can receive text message updates about what is happening in the Booster Club.

There is also a website to order Flier apparel from. Go to the Flandreau Flier Booster Club Facebook page, like it and you can see how to order from SunGold Sports.

There is generic Flier gear and there will be season specific gear to order for your favorite sporting season. Fall sports gear available now includes football and volleyball, with  cross country and golf apparel choices coming soon. Information about how to order from the store will also be available at the event.

But for now, it’s time to start nominating someone for the dunk tank and then be there on August 16 to join the fun with fellow Booster Club members, students and staff at Flandreau High School.

“We’re excited to bring this event to our community. It will bring attention to what our club does and give us an opportunity to showcase the great student athletes that make up Flandreau athletics,” Severtson added.

She reminds that everyone is welcome to monthly meetings the club holds to learn about current projects the booster club is working on and to receive updates on the happenings of the Flier sports teams.

Board member Sandy Sheppard said, “Someone who is a member of the Booster Club recognizes and values the importance of kids being involved in activities; to be part of something bigger than themselves.”

Sheppard also adds, “A booster club member takes pride in their town, community, and local school and desires to support the coaches and players.”

Proceeds from the night are used to support all Flandreau sporting programs. Examples include film sharing services for scouting, high school team camp costs, and youth team jerseys and tournament entries.
