Denny H. Batterson, age 78, passed away August 4, 2017.  

Denny Hugh was born March 3, 1939, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Russell and Mary Evelyn Batterson.  

After graduating from high school in 1957, he served six months in the U.S. Army and was then placed in a special program of the Army Reserves.  

He attended college at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. He moved to California in 1959 and took a position with Aerojet. During his time in California, he was also a pharmaceutical representative for Sandoz and Syntex.  

He then worked briefly as a chaperone, taking high school students to Europe.

In 1972, he moved to Fresno, Calif. to learn the carpentry trade. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1973 where he met Jane. They were married October 13, 1974.

Soon after they married, the couple sold all of their possessions, bought a small Winnebago motorhome and worked their way around the perimeter of the United States, having many adventures on the way.  

They ended up in Oregon where their son David was born in 1976. They then moved to Flandreau, S.D. and remained there until 1985 when they returned to Oregon.  

Denny worked as a general building contractor, finishing his career in charge of maintenance at Camp Lutherwood, Cheshire, Ore.  

Denny was an active Mason and, in addition to his involvement in many Masonic bodies, he was a Life Member of Eugene Lodge #11, Creswell Lodge #112, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Oregon, Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Oregon and Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Orient of Oregon.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Michael, Beth (Dave) Tappan, Kathy Christensen and son David (Melissa Reid); four grandsons, Max and Drew Tappan and Tanner and Chase Batterson and his brother, Bob (Joyce Christy) Batterson.

A memorial service for Denny will be held Friday, September 8, at 2 p.m. at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 1250 W 18th Av., Eugene, Ore. Memorial gifts may be made to Camp Lutherwood.
