Colman’s Veterans Memorial Park on Highway 34 is taking shape with the monument stones and statues in place. The community also has sold about 250 pavers that will be placed in the next few weeks. The park also will have a flag pole in the center and landscaping, including possibly a sidewalk, said Roger Fritz, American Legion commander. The group started working on the project about a year ago and has included numerous donations from businesses and others in the community. Moody County 4-H purchased one of the military statues and has gotten a grant for landscaping, which the youth will help do, he said.
Pavers in honor of someone and their service are $100 each. Organizers had to double the area for pavers, which are still available, because there was so much interest, Fritz said.
Information requests and donations can be sent to Colman American Legion Post 278, P.O. Box 141, Colman, SD 57017. Contact Fritz with questions at 530-0046 or Andy Groos at 530-1025.
