Cardinals handily win opening round at State Amateur tourney

MITCHELL – Deon Entringer threw seven scoreless innings as Flandreau beat Freeman 10-0 in eight innings in the first round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Saturday night at Cadwell Park.
The pickup player from Colman allowed three hits and struck out eight batters without issuing a walk.
Zach Weber tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, striking out one.
Carter Howell was 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times.
Tanner Harris doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Bret Severtson ended up 2-for-4.
Aiden Ladd doubled with one out in the second. Severtson followed with an RBI single and stole second. Harris added an RBI hit to make it 2-0.
In the third, Howell doubled and stole third, scoring on an error on the play.
Severtson reached on an error to begin the fourth, before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Entringer drew a base on balls and stole second.
Harris came through with a two-run double. Howell’s sacrifice fly with one away plated courtesy runner Luke Gassman, pushing the margin to 6-0.
Flandreau put up three more runs in the sixth.
With one out, Howell singled and Jared Campbell doubled. Mitch Foster lifted a flyball and reached on an error, which allowed Howell and Campbell to sprint home. Foster scored on Keith Cutler’s groundout.
Howell singled and took second on a groundout in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Zach Hansen ended the game via the 10-run rule with an RBI single with one away.
The Black Sox’s Jake Weier finished 2-for-3.
Nate Broehm gave up six runs – three earned – on five hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in three innings.
Flandreau faces Cornbelt League rival Canova in the second round Wednesday, August 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Mitchell.
