A’s play two State tourney games before being sent home


The Colman As went two rounds in the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tourney before bowing out of further competion.
First round
Sioux Falls – Trey Kreier pitched a complete game and Canova put up five runs in the third inning en route to picking up a 7-2 win over Cornbelt League foe Colman in the second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday evening at Ronken Field.
Kreier gave up two runs – one earned – on eight hits. He struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk.
Trevor Fruedenthal (double) went 3-for-3 and Garrett Gassman finished 3-for-5. Justin Miller was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and scored three times.
Miller drew a base on balls to lead off the game and quickly stole second. Fruedenthal’s single put runners on the corners.
Jared Miller drove in Justin Miller with a groundout to get Canova on the board.
The A’s answered in the bottom of the second as Tim Kuphal singled with one away and scored on a two-out double by Jake Otkin, who ended up 2-for-4 in the game.
The Gang countered with five runs in the third.
Tim Gassman singled to get it going.
Two pitches later, Justin Miller smacked the ball over the wall in right field to put the Gang ahead 3-1.
Fruedenthal and Garrett Gassman kept it going with hits, before Jared Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Derek Miller’s two run single made it a 5-1 game and chased Colman starter Ian Barker.
Both baserunners advanced on a wild pitch, before Jason Miller brought Jared Miller home with a fielder’s choice to put Canova on top 6-1.
Colman’s Paul Clark reached on an error and advanced to second in the bottom of the third. Mark Houck came through with an RBI single with two away.
In the fourth, Justin Miller singled and Fruedenthal followed with an RBI double to provide for the final margin of 7-2.
Deon Entringer took over on the mound for Barker in the third and kept the A’s in it, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over the final seven frames.
Entringer went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate. Adam Fritz also doubled.
Barker surrendered six runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in two-plus innings.

Second round
SIOUX FALLS – The Colman A’s stayed hot at the plate as they pounded out 19 hits in an 11-6 defeat of Tabor in the first round of the Class B South Dakota Amateur State Baseball Tournament at Ronken Field on Wednesday, August 1
Both teams came out swinging as the Bluebirds scored four runs in the top of the first before the A’s answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Tabor stretched its lead to 5-3 with another run in the second, but Colman tied the game with two in the bottom and then tallied one more in the third to take the lead for good.
The A’s tacked on two in the fourth and then added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eight for an 11-5 advantage.
Tabor scored once in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Mike Preheim led Colman with four hits, including two doubles, and four runs batted in while Billy Stitz added four hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.
Adam Fritz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs as Jake Otkin had two hits and a run batted in.
Deon Entringer singled and doubled; Ian Barker had two singles; and Paul Clark plated two runs with a base hit.
Entringer earned the win in relief as he allowed one run on five hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Tim Kuphal started and gave up five runs – four earned – on seven hits in the first two frames.
Colin Muth suffered the loss after giving up eight runs on 12 hits and three walks with one strikeout in three innings of work. Austin White allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings of relief.
