Fliers sent four to Class A mat meet

Flandreau’s six regionals wrestlers scored 66 teams points to place eighth in the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s Region 1A tournament and three of those wrestlers qualified for the State A Championships held last weekend.

SIOUX FALLS – The Flandreau Fliers failed to make the podium brackets at the SDSHAA Class A Championships but gained some valuable experience.

Teague Bergjord and Karter Headrick both recorded one win and two losses at the state meet while seniors Julie Pitsenberger and Brayden Wiese both went 0-2.
Bergjord was defeated by the fourth seed, Kayden Tchida of Sisseton in the 113 pound weight class. The Flier sophomore won over Aden Candelaria pinning the Rapid City Central wrestler in 4:02. In his final match, he lost to Max Schoenhard of Rapid City Stevens in a 16-5 major decision. Bergjord closed the year with a record of 30-19.
At 132, Julie Pitsenberger was matched with Alexa Swaney of Belle Fourche and was pinned in 54 seconds in the first round. In the second round, she lost to Kyla Loga of Doland by fall, 1:47. She finished the year with an 11-12 record.
Brayden Wiese faced the top seed in the 132 pound class and eventual crunner-up, Nolan Miles of Brookings, and lost by a 20-4 tech fall. He then lost to region opponent Slaton Jones of SF O’Gorman, in a clost 6-5 decision. His season record was 31-23 and he closes out his prep wrestling career this year as a graduating senior.
At 190, Karter Headrick began the tourney as the eighth seed, but lost to Kishmar Eberline of Sioux Falls Lincoln, 8-7. He then defeated Tate Crosswaite of Rapid City Stevens pinning him in 1:37 but lost to Ian Hook of Rapid City Central in a late match fall of 4:20. He finished the year with a 41-13 record.
