Boys first, girls second at Sioux Valley meet

VOLGA – The Flandreau boys and the Sioux Valley girls won the Sioux Valley Invite on Tuesday, May 3. The Flier boys scored 188 points and the Cossack girls took home the title with 144.5 points. Flandreau girls scored 133 points for second place.
“Overall, it was a fun and rewarding day for our both teams in the jumps, throws, and races,” said Coach Owen Parsley.
Girls
Wolsey-Wessington finished in third with 93 and De Smet came in fifth with 71. Oldham-Ramona/Rutland and Lake Preston rounded out the field, coming in fifth (57.5) and sixth (36), respectively.
The Fliers won six of the events. They had the top-four finishers in the 200 meter dash. Claire Sheppard came in first with a time of 28 seconds and Lizzie Pavlis came in second (28.6). Isabelle Pavlis finished in third (29.2) and Ella Hoffman came in fourth (29.3). Lizzie Pavlis tied for first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.5.
Sheppard came in first in the 400 meter run as well. She finished in 1:05.2.
Faith Wiese took home first in the 800 meter run as she finished in 2:28.7. Kiley Westberry won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:54.0.
Flandreau had the top-two teams in the 4x400 relay. Lizzie Pavlis, Isabelle Pavlis, Sheppard and Lily Klein won the event with a time of 4:29.7. Maria Parsley, Sadie Iott, Hoffman and Wiese came in second (4:33.4).
Boys
The Cossacks came in second with 123 points. De Smet came in third (73) and Wolsey-Wessington finished in fourth (70). ORR finished in fifth (42), Flandreau Indian came in sixth (26) and Lake Preston rounded out the field in seventh (19).
The Fliers took first place in 10 of the events. Alex Anderson won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.3 seconds. He also won the 200 meter dash in 23.4 seconds.
Tathan Headrick came in first in the 400 meter run as he finished in 55.1 seconds. Brenton Westberry won the 800 meter run with time of 2:12.0. He also won the 1,600 meter run in 4:55.6, the first Flier to break the five minute mark in five years.
Liam Streitz took first place in the 300 meter hurdles. He finished in 43 seconds.
The Fliers won the 4x400 relay. Ethan Hoffman, Liam Streitz, Headrick and Anderson came in first with a time of 3:44.8. Tanner Reed, Davien Schipper, Lurick Daiely and Matthew Gassman won the 4x800 in 9:09.9.
Flandreau won both the high jump and long jump. Mike Tollefson came in first in the high jump with a jump of five feet-10 inches and Tyce Ryan won the long jump with a jump of 18 feet and 8.25 inches.
