If you’ve ever walked into the Moody County Courthouse to pay a bill, connect with a Commissioner, attend a hearing or search for records, chances are you’ve walked by the memorial display for another officer killed in the line of duty from Moody County.
Deputy Sheriff William Paul Davis was killed in 2003 while responding to a crash on I-29.
While the circumstances surrounding Davis’ death were different from those that killed Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok on February 2nd, 2024, the local Sheriff’s Department is among few across the state to experience such losses among its team in the line of duty.
Davis, the Officer Down Memorial Page states, was “placing the driver of one of the vehicles under arrest for refusing to sign a citation when another driver lost control of her vehicle on the icy road. The vehicle slid into the back of Deputy Davis’ patrol car and then struck him as he was searching the suspect.”
He tragically died at the scene. He was 54-years-old.
Current Sheriff Troy Wellman was a Deputy at that time and ended up going out with the ambulance as he stopped by the office while off duty.
Davis had served a 21-year career in law enforcement and was a United States Army and Navy Vietnam War veteran. His uniform shirt, photos, and more can be found in the first-floor rotunda at the Moody County Courthouse.
